Freelance Interpreter

I became freelance in February.

Since my boss moved back to the U.S. at the end of January and there
are no more expats at the company,I had the choice of finding a
fulltime in-house interpretation job at a different company or taking
my chances at becoming independent. I contemplated my choices briefly
but knew what I wanted. So I stopped worrying and made a choice.

I still go to the same company 2-3 times a week to interpret for
telephone conferences and visitors.

I also started doing document translations for a graphic designer my
friend introduced me to,and this month I will start doing interpretations
for a type of business I've never been exposed to before.
On top of that, a business trip to Michigan, USA is scheduled
at the end of the month.

I have always wanted to become freelance, and now that I've achieved
this goal I feel gratitude for the work people trust me with,
relish the liberty of having more control over my time,
and feel a tad bit lonely too.

Looking back on my mere 6 year old career, I remember the struggles
as a new interpreter in a room with about 10 Japanese men and
1 German man. I could not keep up with the heated discussion among
the Japanese. I had no control, was too scared to ask questions.
The poor German man who was being left out of the discussion made
a smart choice of leaving the meeting early.
And I cried in the lady's room afterwards.

Another time at a different company, I have felt unacknowledged and
undervalued, when I was treated like a translation robot
instead of a team member.

There was also a time when during a large meeting of about 30, I KNEW
I was understanding and interpreting correctly when someone said
"I don't understand the interpretation" in front of everyone.
I wished I could have said to him, "don't blame the interpreter
for your inability to answer the question!". Ugh.

Things that made everything feel worthwhile were:
The first successful meeting I handled on my own.
At the end of the meeting, the two men whom I supported
shook hands and said "I finally understand what you wanted to say."

When a bilingual staff told me "I always listen to the interpreter during
meetings to make sure everything is being communicated correctly,
but with you, I don't need to worry so I am able to concentrate on
the meeting ."

A simple "thank you" or a compliment like "you did a great job" or
acknowledgement like "you must be so tired after such a long meeting"
is enough to make me feel happy and motivated.

Last but definitely not the least, the friendships and trust I have built
with co-workers in the process of being their voices will always
be treasured.

So what comes next? I guess it's up to me.
